There are many factors that can contribute to rotator cuff injury, but the six most common causes include:
- Repetitive Strain Injuries: This usually happens when people engage in repetitive overhead motions like swimming, weightlifting or painting. The constant stress on the shoulder joint and muscles can cause small tears in the rotator cuff over time.
- Age-related wear and tear: As we age, our muscles and tendons naturally become weaker. This makes them more prone to injury, especially in the rotator cuff which is responsible for stabilising the shoulder joint.
- Poor posture: Slouching or having poor posture can put significant strain on the shoulders and upper back, causing imbalances in muscle strength and flexibility. Over time, this can lead to rotator cuff injuries.
- Trauma or direct impact: A sudden and forceful blow to the shoulder can cause tears in the rotator cuff. This can happen during sports activities or accidents.
- Genetics: Some people may be born with a weaker or more prone-to-injury rotator cuff due to genetic factors. This means that they may be more susceptible to rotator cuff injuries, even with minimal strain on the shoulder.
- Lack of warm-up and stretching: Engaging in physical activities without proper warm-up and stretching can increase the risk of injury. Without preparing the muscles and tendons, they are more likely to become strained or torn during exercise.
